Ethyra is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including teachers and students with disabilities. Our platform is designed to meet accessibility standards and provide an inclusive experience for everyone.
Conformance Status
Ethyra is conformant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. We also comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
Automated testing is conducted using axe-core and Lighthouse, with a current Lighthouse accessibility score of 100/100.
Accessibility Features
Ethyra is built using Radix UI, an industry-standard accessible component library.
Keyboard Navigation
- All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard
- Skip navigation link allows users to bypass repetitive content
- Tab navigation follows a logical order
- Escape key closes dialogs, modals, and dropdown menus
- Drag-and-drop components (rubric builder) have keyboard alternatives via dnd-kit
Focus Management
- Visible focus indicators on all interactive elements
- Focus is properly managed when opening and closing dialogs and modals
Screen Reader Support
- Semantic HTML structure with proper heading hierarchy
- ARIA labels on interactive elements including navigation, buttons, and form fields
- ARIA landmarks (
main,nav) used throughout the application - Dialog and modal titles are properly announced
Visual Design
- Color contrast ratios meet WCAG AA standards (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
- Dark mode support for users who prefer reduced brightness
- Text can be resized up to 200% using browser zoom without loss of functionality
- Each page has a unique, descriptive page title
Forms and Inputs
- All form fields have associated labels
- Required fields are clearly indicated
- Error messages are identified in text and announced to screen readers
- Destructive actions require confirmation
Language
- Page language is declared as English (
lang="en") - Consistent navigation and layout throughout the application
Third-Party Content
Some content depends on external sources:
- PDF Documents: Student submissions uploaded as PDFs depend on the accessibility of the original document.
- Authentication: Sign-in and sign-up pages are rendered by WorkOS, a third-party authentication provider.
